I'm sitting here a month into my endeavor of becoming a guitar teacher. A few minor set backs here and there. Car problems mostly, printer out of ink, and the ever so dropping Chicago land temperatures. The point of my first article is not even going to be guitar related, it is going to be about perseverance, drive and staying true to ones dreams. Now this article isn't going to be completely void of guitar stuff but mostly a reminder to motivate everyone, even in a non guitar related fashion.
Now let's start this story around the year 1998. I was a year into college and still trying to find my place. At that time I had been playing guitar for about six or seven years. When I started college I wanted to learn music, play guitar, and be happy. Spending countless hours in my room teaching myself the ins and outs of that wonderful instrument was about all I did back then. Then there was that day my entire life changed. I went to go see the school's guidance counselor. He said the age old question that every young person hears, "What do you want to do with your life?" I wanna rock, I replied. Okay that was a fabrication but not much different then the truth. I said I wanted to learn music especially guitar. The reply I got floored me. I was told that unless I wanted to teach music I wouldn't make anything out of studying music. At the time I thought the idea of teaching was a horrid one so he asked if I had any other interests. I replied with computers. The wave of the future it was heralded and it part completely true. I then changed my major from music to computers. One of the biggest regrets in my life. I'm not saying that the computer field is a bad idea, but one that is ever changing and changing too fast. Not much of what I learned about computers back in 1998 is still relevant to today. I make a joke now that how much of C++ (computer programming language) has changed since 1998 but the C Major scale has been the same for a long time.
Where am I going with this? It is simple. In fact the meat of this article starts now. My life in the computer field was a horrible one. Working in cubes, getting yelled at by customers on the phone, and having an allotted time to go to the bathroom. Who knows how my life would have turned out if I would have stayed in music? My life has come full circle and looking back on things I realized I made the wrong choice. I abandoned my dream. I let an outside influence sway my decision. I am now a guitar teacher. I am now doing what I can to follow my dream. Many years behind schedule but I am still doing it.
NEVER LET GO OF YOUR DREAMS!
