Hello all, ya I know it has been a while since I wrote anything. Truth is I don’t really enjoy writing to myself. Kind of creepy. Anyway recently I’ve thought a lot about popular music throughout the years. Everyone has their preferred music and everyone also has strong dislike for others. I consider myself a classic rock and heavy metal fan. I will stop you there as there is a lot of disjointed believes on what heavy metal is. To me heavy metal is the stuff like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and bands of that like. There are so many sub genres of heavy metal that I could write for days and still not be anywhere near finished. Some people might think of Heavy Metal like Pantera, Slayer, Antrax, and some of the more modern bands like Slipknot, Korn, etc.
But back on topic. I remember a few years ago I went to an 80s tribute band. I actually had a rather good time. The band had a standard four piece but the group had a handful of singers that rotated based on the band that they were covering. The place went nuts when they played Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. I’ve heard the song way to many times and sat down. I have nothing against Journey but one can only take so much of them. Later in the night the band started in with The Hellion / Electric Eye by Judas priest. I absolutely love that song, I went crazy. I stood up, pumped my fist, banged my head, and then looked around to see I was the only one. I felt a little silly but didn’t care. I actually learned quite a bit that night.
One thing I learned is that you should always be happy in what music you like. If someone doesn’t like it well that is their prerogative. If you subscribe to any guitar groups on facebook and there is an article about Nickleback then beware as the hate comments will flow like a hot knife through butter. It has become the cool and hip thing to hate on Nickleback. To this day I don’t really understand why. I neither like nor dislike Nickleback, however I have enough respect for other people’s taste (not to mention I don’t like to follow the herd) that I’m not going to bash Nickleback for the sake of fitting in. I actually like that song and video, taking into context that the song and video were recorded in the early 80s. Why is there a backlash and calling it the worst video ever? Context people. Look at what other bands were doing at the time. Look up some old Def Leppard, Manowar, Iron Maiden, or Dio videos. They are all cheesy fantasy stuff just like this, however the musicianship is better on the more polished bands.
The message I’m trying to get across is simple. Like the music you like. I have the bands I like and the ones I don’t, but that doesn’t make me right or wrong. That just makes me different as to what I enjoy. You should never let anyone dictate to you what is good or bad, but this doesn’t grant you a license to slag anything. If you don’t like it, then that is your right. Music is passion but understanding different people have different passions helps. Arguing about a band you dislike with someone won’t change anything. Realizing that the other persons mind is made up. Guess what folks, Justin Bieber has millions of fans. So what? Does it affect your life any? Does it change your style of guitar? If you like him, that is on you. What matters the most is listening to the music YOU like.
